If you're thinking about seeing a psychologist, a Mental Health Treatment Plan may be one way to make accessing psychological support more affordable.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is prepared by your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist following an assessment of your mental health and circumstances. If you are eligible, it can provide access to Medicare rebates for psychology services under the Better Access initiative.
At Amara Wellness & Psychology, we support clients who are accessing psychological care through a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a plan developed with your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist to help identify your mental health needs and the type of treatment and support that may be helpful.
They will talk with you about how you've been feeling, what you've been experiencing and how your mental health may be affecting your everyday life.
If they determine that you are eligible and that a Mental Health Treatment Plan is appropriate for you, they can prepare the plan and provide a referral for eligible psychological services.
You don’t need to have a Mental Health Care Plan organised before contacting Amara Wellness & Psychology to arrange an appointment. However in order to claim a medicare rebate, you’ll need a valid referral and Mental Health Care Plan before your first appointment.
How many sessions can I access?
Under the Medicare Better Access initiative, eligible patients can claim a Medicare benefit for up to:
The 10 individual sessions are generally accessed in two stages:
Initial course of treatment
Your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist can refer you for up to 6 individual sessions as part of your initial course of treatment.
Subsequent course of treatment
After your initial sessions, your Mental Health Treatment Plan can be reviewed by your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist. If further psychological treatment is considered appropriate, you may be referred for additional sessions, up to the remaining annual limit of 10 individual sessions.
For example, if you use all 6 sessions from your initial referral, you may then be able to access up to another 4 sessions following a review and new referral.
This means the maximum Medicare-rebatable individual psychology services available under Better Access is 10 sessions per calendar year.
Your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist will determine the number of sessions included in each referral based on your individual circumstances and treatment needs.
How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
The first step is to make an appointment with your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist.
During your appointment, they may ask about:
They will then assess your circumstances and determine whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan is appropriate.
It's important to be open and honest with them about how you're feeling. This gives them a clearer understanding of what you're experiencing and helps them determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Psychological support can be helpful for a wide range of concerns and experiences, including:
Your psychologist will work with you to understand what is happening in your life and develop strategies that are relevant to your individual needs and goals.

No.
You don't need a Mental Health Treatment Plan to see a psychologist at Amara Wellness & Psychology.
Depending on your circumstances, you may also be able to access psychological support through:
Once your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist has prepared your Mental Health Care Plan and referral, you can book an appointment with a psychologist.
Your referral doesn’t need to be addressed to Amara Wellness & Psychology or a specific psychologist. We also accept general referrals, such as “Dear Psychologist”, or referrals addressed elsewhere.
At your first appointment, your psychologist will discuss what brings you to therapy, what you’d like support with and your goals, then work with you to develop a suitable approach.
If further sessions are appropriate, your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist can review your plan and provide a further referral within the annual session limit.
The Medicare rebate for a standard, 50+ minute session with a registered (general) psychologist is $101.55 as of 1 of July 2026.
A Medicare rebate is available for eligible services provided under the Better Access initiative, but this does not necessarily mean your appointment will be completely covered by Medicare.
A gap or out-of-pocket fee may apply depending on the psychologist's consultation fee and the Medicare rebate you are eligible to receive.
If you're unsure about the fees or rebates available for your appointment, our team can help explain the process.
The Medicare Better Access initiative provides rebates for a maximum of 10 individual mental health treatment services per calendar year.
You can continue seeing a psychologist after you've used your 10 Medicare-rebatable sessions, but Medicare will not provide a Better Access rebate for additional sessions once your annual limit has been reached.
You may be able to continue accessing support through another funding pathway or by privately funding your appointments, depending on your circumstances.
